In our last article we talk about the mind-body connection in relation to disease. In the article, we mentioned Dr. Deepak Chopra’s Radical Well-Being and how he talks about the power of meditation. We’re going to go a little deeper into the importance of meditation and other lifestyle factors that can actually heal yourself.

  1. Sleep: Sleep is the number one thing your body needs. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your body is going through a significant amount of stress. This takes your body out of the parasympathetic nervous system and puts you into fight or flight. Have you ever gotten a poor night of sleep and felt extremely hungry the next day? When you don’t sleep your body produces less leptin and more cortisol. Leptin is the hormone that suppresses your appetite when you’ve had enough to eat and cortisol is your stress hormone. When you’re stressed, your body craves more food and if you don’t have hormones telling you when to stop eating, you may be prone to overeating. This alone can throw your body out of alignment. Cortisol can also mess with your mood, causing more anger. (Hello low vibes!)
  2. Meditation: Meditation brings our bodies into a theta frequency. When you are in a theta state you experience visualization, creativity, insight, peace, and you are connected to the universe. This allows you to decompress, and bring your body back to the sympathetic nervous system. This is where healing can occur. When we heal our bodies, we can experience more positivity, creativity and fun because we’re not reserving energy.
  3. Movement: Moving our bodies allows our lymphatic system to move and cleanse itself. A sluggish lymphatic system leads to lower immunity, fluid retention, and retention of toxins in our bodies. Movement also produces endorphins and other happy hormones that can improve our moods, combatting stress and environmental factors.
  4. Emotions: Recognizing our emotions is extremely important. This doesn’t mean we have to always be happy or positive, in fact that can sometimes be counterintuitive. It’s important to feel your emotions and process them. By processing them and releasing them, we are no longer storing them in the body. Journaling is an excellent way of doing this because your body no longer feels the need to store the memory once it’s written on paper. You can start to release some of that pain.
  5. Nutrition: Fueling your body with food that intuitively feels good to you is extremely important. Knowing your limits and what your body is craving can benefit you and your energy. Our bodies are cyclical, especially for women. It’s important to feed your body what it needs at that moment.

When people hear they have a terminal illness or have to live with something for the rest of their lives, their mind immediately goes into shock and acts in a place of fear. Instead of figuring out what their body needs holistically, they put all of their energy into fighting the fire.

 

Many people will say that “Oh, it’s genetics, I was bound to get it.” or “This is just what happens to people my age.” But the truth is, that’s not technically true. 

What are the facts?

Studies from Dr. Bruce Lipton shows that our genes are influenced by our environment. That means, when you live in an environment that is conducive to stress, anger and negative emotions, your body remains in fight or flight, activating your sympathetic nervous system. When this occurs, your genes are susceptible to disease.

 

In Dr. Deepak Chopra’s Radical Well Being he talks about how our genes are responsive to our lifestyle, and that meditation can heal our bodies. And if we can use our minds to heal our bodies, that means we can also use our minds to harm our bodies through stress. He claims that 95% of diseases are caused by stress and the implications that has on the body. 

How to change

But how can we change our environment when our world isn’t always conducive to that? We have jobs, families, overexposure and connection to everything in the palm of our hands. As a society, we are more stressed than ever.

 

There are many things we can do to heal ourselves. The first and obvious ones are sleep, diet, and exercise. Our genes respond to meditation and our thoughts. Before bed and when you wake up in the morning are optimal times to meditate because your body is still in theta, a frequency that is connected to the unconscious mind. This allows you to connect to a higher source and raise your frequency, making you less reactive to the environment around you. And in turn, this decreases the inflammation in your body. Less inflammation = less disease.

Emotions: The True Cause of Illness

More studies are starting to prove that emotions are linked to illness. Dr. Deepak Chopra states, “In 95% of disease cases, there is something you can do about it right now to change the outcome of that disease.” His belief is that inflammation is the main cause of disease. And what causes inflammation? What we put into our bodies. Whether that is food, toxins or thoughts.

What Causes This?

Thoughts have a direct impact on our bodies and how we feel. Anger triggers the body’s fight or flight mode, causing a surge of adrenaline to flood the body, taxing the adrenals and moving blood away from your main organs in order to perform physically in a fight or flight event. However, even though you aren’t inherently in any danger, your mind and body still thinks you are. This can cause adrenal fatigue, heart issues, stomach issues, among many other things. When the subconscious stores that anger, it wreaks havoc on the nervous system.

When the nervous system is compromised, so is the entire body. And anger isn’t the only emotion that can affect your body and be stored. Anxiety, depression, rejection, fear, guilt, shame, hopelessness, worry, blame, etc. Any intense emotion can be stored in the body. Now, not all emotions are negative or have a negative impact on the body. But the negative ones cause inflammation and imbalance within the body.

How You’ll Find Success Once You Ditch Stress

There’s a notion in our society that in order to be successful, you have to put in an exponential amount of hard work and endure a lot of stress. Many people paint success as a monetary goal achieved, or a status that is gained.

But the truth is, success can mean a lot of things and ultimately it is the opposite of stress. Success can be a well balanced life, surrounded by positive people, places and things. It can mean having peace and kindness in your heart. Success can be defined as loving what you do, even if it doesn’t make you a million dollars or give you the status that you’re looking for. However, when we do find success in this sense, it is almost always rewarded with the extrinsic goals we desire as well.

How Does This Work?

For example: You quit your corporate job to become a full time writer. At first the pay may not be good or the stability seems to waiver, but you trust your intuition and continue to follow your passion. Now there’s two paths you could go down. You could stress about it and work yourself up and put in extra hours thinking of ways you can be successful and potentially burn yourself out, or you could keep your peace, remain calm and place your energy on what you love to do, writing. Anxiety comes in all shapes and sizes. For some people, it shows up in small habits like picking nails, skin or hair. For others, it’s a full blown panic attack. They can’t think straight, they feel like they are suffocating and the world is collapsing around them. Once the training and hours spent practicing are complete, you are now able to run your own business. What is Your Neural Network?

Everything in the human body works together. Our nervous system, our limbic system, our lymphatic system, our organs, our muscles, everything functions innately with every cell and atom of your body. So when one thing is imbalanced, or you’re experiencing a certain emotion for a long time, your whole body will be affected by this issue.

Everyone is constantly being exposed to outside factors that may affect the body. Our society is always living at a certain level of fight or flight, activating our cortisol levels and creating adrenal fatigue. This alone can cause imbalances.

We are also exposed to more on a daily basis through our phones than our ancestors were exposed to their whole lives. The information overload and constant stimulation can also interfere with our hormones and nervous system.

Mental health diagnoses have increased exponentially over the years and the United States has become one of the most medicated nations. Fixing the Relationships in our Lives

Every relationship goes through their fair share of arguments, disagreements and stressful moments. But if the relationships in your life all feel heavy, negative and difficult to navigate there might be something within you that is reflecting onto these relationships.

Louise Hay says “The only way to change others – change ourselves first. Change your patterns, and you will find that ‘they’ are different, too. Blame is useless. Blaming only gives away our power. Keep your power. Without power, we cannot make changes.”

How to Change a Negative Narrative

The way we grew up, the beliefs that our parents and ancestors had, and the way society shapes us can all have an effect on our personal narrative. We may think that because we grew up poor, we don’t deserve to be lavishly wealthy. Or we may believe that we can’t reach certain fitness goals because our bodies aren’t built a certain way.

These are examples of limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs are anything that your mind has created to stop you from achieving or manifesting whatever you want. What’s important to know about limiting beliefs is that they can be changed. A belief is just a thought that has been programmed into your subconscious by your mind. You may not even know you have a limiting belief about something. For example, you want to get a new job but you don’t think you have enough skills to get the position you want. Instead of going for the job anyways and taking inspired action to fulfill your dream, you don’t even try.

We can identify limiting beliefs by recognizing the negative talk within our minds. If you notice yourself thinking negatively about a person, situation, goal, or idea, you may have a subconscious limiting belief.

Limiting beliefs may not disappear overnight, but if you recognize them you can start to change the way you talk to yourself.and view the world. Anything is truly possible if you want it to be. There’s a reason you have specific dreams and goals. If you want to achieve them, start feeling worthy enough for them. Once you believe that those goals and dreams are for you, you will be guided by the universe and you can start to take inspired action. Don’t worry about how everything will unfold to get you to where you want to be. Trust that you are doing everything you need to.
