What I Hear When You Tell Me to ‘Stop Being So Negative’


This is a common sentence many of us with mental illnesses get told.

“Just focus on something else.”

“There’s so much good in the world, stop focusing on the bad.”

You don’t think I have tried? For much of my life I have dealt with anxiety and depression.2 This means almost all the time I am either over-catastrophizing, staying on alert for the next bad thing that could happen, overanalyzing every mistake I’ve made, and after all that, getting stuck in a head space that constantly tells me I’m not good enough and never will be. This head space in the past has often led me to periods of self-harm and suicidal thoughts that never get acted upon but are always there in the back of my mind.

This never stops.

When a person tells me, “stop being so negative” it feels like a slap to the face. Basically you’re saying, “You can turn it off, you can choose to focus on something else.” While I may have times where I can put my focus into my friendships, my job, my school life and my hobbies, these things are also stressors and end up leading me back to depression and anxiety. Regardless how many good periods of time I have, depression and anxiety are always going to be there.

So next time you see a person or are talking with them and they are having a difficult time with their depression and anxiety and seem to be focused on the negative, don’t just say, “Stop focusing on the negative,” but instead, maybe ask what you can do to help. If they tell you there is nothing you can do, ask what the negative emotions are focused on? You may want to suggest helpful distractions or ways of coping. The statement “stop being so negative” just makes them feel bad for the depression and anxiety, and that’s honestly the last thing they need or want to hear. How do affirmations work?

Affirmations are little sayings or sentences that you may say to yourself to encourage the growth of that desire. For example, let’s say you want to get more money. You may say to yourself, “I am willing, ready and able to receive money.” But in the back of your mind you might be saying, “This isn’t going to work. This is dumb.” In the end the negative comment is going to trump the positive affirmation.


Positive affirmations are a way of life. The way you think is the way you live. If you truly believe that telling yourself positive things won’t work and your life won’t improve, then it wont. However, if you tell yourself that all the positive affirmations will work and they will change your life, then they have a great chance of doing so.


Thinking is a habit. If you wanted to quit smoking, you would have to break that habit. Once you officially quit smoking you might have an improved quality of life. You might be able to run longer, stop coughing, have more energy, the list goes on. That is the same way affirmations work. Once you break the bad habit of how you used to think, you will start thinking more positively and positive energy will be attracted to you.


Your life will fill with opportunities, happiness, wealth, health and love, just to name a few. So how do you start with these positive affirmations? Well it’s quite simple. Just start telling yourself positive things!


Do you want to attract more love? Tell yourself this: I have come to this planet to learn to love myself more, and to share that love with all those around me.


Do you want to have more energy? Tell yourself this: Today, I am brimming with energy and overflowing with joy


Do you want forgiveness? Tell yourself this: I forgive those who have harmed me in my past and peacefully detach from them.


If you want a better marriage: My marriage is becoming stronger, deeper, and more stable each day.


If you want more self-love: I acknowledge my own self-worth; my confidence is soaring


If you want good health: I love my body and it is a powerhouse for fueling me. I respect and listen to what it needs.


If you want success: My obstacles are moving out of my way; my path is carved towards greatness.


These are just a few affirmations. You can find them everywhere and you can even create them yourself. It is so important to watch what you think, because that is what you become. Do not deny your power and your worth!

How to Prosper in your Wealth

We’ve all had moments in our lives where as soon as we get our hands on a little extra cash, something happens where we need to spend it on something we don’t want to. We kick and we scratch at the idea and curse that we are unlucky. We believe that we genuinely cannot get ahead because something will always happen once we do.


The universe has a funny way of reciprocating what you give to it. If you are giving the universe these negative thoughts, the universe will only return the favor. If we change our thoughts we might actually start to see a change in the way we receive.


Fear is a big factor in a lot of negative situations. We fear that we cannot move forward with positive thoughts because it seems too good to be true. We constantly fear that we will never have enough money. We fear that we will never find love or happiness. Instead of putting our energy into manifesting these actual desires that we fear, we put our energy into manifesting the fear that we have that comes along with those desires.


When trying to manifest prosperity, it is important to remember that the universe supplies us with an abundance of goods. It will always give us what we need when we need it. By trusting this process, you will start to ease some of that fear. It is good to practice this abundance theory. You can do this by counting the stars, or admiring all the grains of sand on the beach or feeling the grass beneath your feet and hands.


Another great technique to practice is noticing all the abundances that you have already received. Allow yourself to be thankful for every little thing in your life. Be thankful for your house, your electricity, your heat, your clothing, your plumbing, etc. And even though those things cost money, the universe has given you an abundance of wealth and has given you the ability to be responsible for those things. Thank the universe for allowing those things to encounter into your life and for the opportunities you were given to accept those things. Do not fear your bills, but rather appreciate them because they are a statement of all the things that you have earned through your hard work and trust.


It is also important that we keep an open mind. When our mind is open, more opportunities are drawn to us. It is best to not judge other people and how they spend their money either. By comparing how much wealth you have to another person only increases the gap of “failure.” Even though you have less money than that person does not mean you have failed; however, you are misplacing your energy onto how much you should have instead of how much you will receive. If you do compare money, always keep an open mind and appreciate their hard work and acknowledge their accomplishments. Giving support will only increase the support you receive.


By visualizing prosperity, wealth and abundance, you are sending out to the universe what you could have. Everyday you should tell yourself positive affirmations.


“I am open to all the universe has to offer.”

“I am open to the abundance the universe can give me.”

“Wealth is attracted to me everyday.”

“I bask in wealth and prosperity and I enjoy and receive it whole-heartedly.”


Everyday has the possibility of new beginnings. Rejoice in all of the possibilities and opportunities that are given to you. Recognize each moment as an opportunity to be receptive to wealth and new beginnings. Be open minded and supportive of others and their wealth. Be open minded about your own wealth. Release your fear and instead manifest your energy into the actual process instead of the fear of the process. Be thankful of all the abundances that you already have and thankful for the ones that you are about to receive. Be mindful of how you think about money and wealth. Trust that the universe will give you what you need when you need it. Do not worry about not having enough because your energy is then focused on the ‘not enough’ part instead of the ‘abundance of money’ part. Recognize each day and moment as your next opportunity to accept wealth.


What does your morning routine say about you?

If you’re the kind of person who likes to roll over the minute you hear the alarm and hit the snooze button, you might immediately be setting your day off on the wrong foot. If the first thoughts you have when you wake up are, “I wish I could just sleep more, I don’t want to go to work, I can’t get out of bed or keep my eyes open…” you might be setting yourself up for failure.

Thinking negative thoughts the moment you wake up is setting a negative pattern for your morning routine, which in turn can make your day negative. It is important to always remember that what you give out to the universe is what you receive. So instead of thinking to yourself that you feel too sleepy to do anything, and you just wish you had a few more hours of sleep, start the day off with a grateful thought. This could include thoughts like, “I’m so fortunate to wake up this morning.” Or “I am going to accomplish today.”

Immediately after you think these things, you should get up and start the day. You will feel so much better having a few extra minutes to get ready so you’re not rushed to work. Before you do anything, grab a glass of water and wake up your body by drinking it. By drinking water right when you wake up, you are fulfilling any lost fluids, detoxing your digestive track, waking up your mind and giving yourself energy. This is also a great weight loss technique and many people have found this helpful while trying to shed some pounds.

While you’re body is waking up and adjusting to the rhythms of the day, it is important to eat a nutrient rich breakfast that will keep you full and focused all morning. Hunger increases cortisol levels, aka the stress hormone. If you are already stressed enough with work, arriving there hungry won’t do you any good. It’s also good to pack little healthy snacks throughout the day so you’re not tempted by the breakroom goodies and midafternoon coffee runs. An apple has more natural sugars than coffee and gives you a better boost than the sugar rush you get from your coffee. If you want a healthier alternative, try eating an apple instead of a couple cups o Joe!

Mornings are the platform of your day. If you consistently hate mornings or even state that you hate mornings, you will be more inclined to have a bad morning. Here are some quick fixes to make your morning the best every morning.

  1. Daily affirmations: State what you want in life and how you are going to achieve it. You are what you think, and if you think positive thoughts and goals you will eventually achieve them.
  2. Stretch: If you have a little extra time in the morning stretch before you do anything. It will get your blood flowing throughout your body waking you up and gradually warming up your muscles. Yoga is also a great way to clear your mind and create a positive space.
  3. Meditation: By placing yourself in a relaxed state before the day even starts will allow you to take on many different challenges. Even if you practice for a couple minutes, you are giving your mind a fresh start. Sometimes long nights of sleep can be filled with stress dreams and tossing and turning. This gives you a fresh start.
  4. Prepare the night before: Pick out your outfit the night before. Plan what you are going to pack for lunch. Set up your briefcase or make sure your purse is set up with everything you need. Lay out your towels and robes. Do everything you possibly can the night before. You will feel more available in the morning to focus on things that are more important.


Whether you’re a morning person or not, it’s good to practice all of these habits and focus on the positives every morning. This will make you feel healthier and happier as well as giving you a great start to your day!
